Music memories…
While on my flight to Berlin last Thursday, to pass the time i thought about all my favourite songs since i was about 13. I started to write them down. So in sight i have decided to post a few posts with those songs and perhaps add a brief description of the year, place and reasons behind the songs that have stood out in my memory and the one’s i have continued to like.
This song comes from the album “It’s a shame about ray” by the Lemonheads.
I’m starting with this song as it fits (seen as i’m just back from Berlin and thought about the song while flying there) It was the time i went to a German college in Ennis, for which i won a scholarship to attend (i was a smart ass with the German language back then). I was 16, my first time going anywhere on my own and had to spend 3 weeks at this place. I had a great time, even though it did feel like jail, as we couldn’t leave the school and could only speak German.
So anyway, one of the girls i got friendly with introduced me to the Lemonheads. I bought their album, “Its a shame about Ray”, of which i still have, actually i have the cover of it, i lost the cd
Another Country
While speanding two nights in Berlin, i ended up in this bookstore on the Friday evening and didn’t leave till about two o’clock in the early hours of Saturday morning. This is a bookshop with a difference. Imagine a house with loads of bookselves and an open door, well this is it. I have always wanted one wall in my house with shelves for books and cd’s, i haven’t got it yet but someday and sitting in this bookstore brought it back more than anything that yes, it will be something that will be happening in the future.
This bookstore was more than any bookstore. It was a bookstore you could go into and sit as you would in your own home. It was so chilled out and relaxing. I stayed and had a few beers during the evening and even ate some sushi…well sushi without the fish it had avocado in it instead.
At around 9.30pm a absolutely amazing dinner was served and eaten and i loved it, i don’t even know what the meat was but it was so herby. The carrots were cooked in orange juice…good idea, they were delicious. After dinner we had a few more drinks, decided not to watch the movie that was been shown and headed of down the road to play a few games of pool and then back to the bookshop before getting the U-Bahn back to my hostel.
Big thankyou to the host of the evening and also to Dave, Orla and Julia and everyone else whoes names i can’t remember. It was an excellent night and if i’m ever in Berlin again i will definately be checking the place out.
Another one from the weekend
Another one i love from the weekend. I even love that it’s not completely symmetrical. I’m heading off to Berlin and plan to spend most of Friday in the zoo and the Tiergarten so hopefully i’ll have some nice animal photos when i come back.
Mon the Biffy!!!
Well excited am i. Biffy Clyro’s new single in due out in the next couple of days. I was watching MTV 2 the other night and just got the end of their new single mountains which was at number 10 in the charts. Finally there coming out into the open. Let’s hope they’ll still come back to Cork and play another gig here. I really really really can’t wait till the concert in Dublin in December…will be my best birthday celebration ever me thinks.
Listen, Watch and Enjoy
Ain’t got no…
Driving home this morning, after a lovely night watching dvd’s at a friends house, i heard the song, “ain’t got no/ i got life” by Nina Simone. Now i never really liked the song but this morning some of the lyrics just hit me. For the past two weeks i’ve felt like something has been taken away from me and lots of other feelings that have left me feeling a lot broken, however i am beginning to rebuild and every day i feel stronger and stronger.
But the following lyrics in the song just brought it home to me, nobody can take away what or who i am or was. I was strong before, have been broken momentarily, but there’s healing there with time, forgiveness and hope.
“Then what have i got
Why am i alive anyway?
Yeah, what have i got
Nobody can take away.
I’ve got life
I’ve got my freedom
i’ve got my life
I’ve got life
and i’m gonna keep it
I’ve got life
and nobody’s gonna take it away”.
